n Monday 06/03/2017, Captain Giuseppe Famà, of the Italian Coast Guard Headquarters, did a lecture about the tasks and functions of the Italian Coast Guard. He also introduced the Italian fleet and it tasks.

The main focus of the lecture was on S&R (search and rescue) and the migration emergency. The Captain explained the legal framework, the main problems, the operational phases and the Italian scenario.

International and national regulations were introduced and the role of the UN International Marine Organization (IMO) was explained.

Finally Captain Famà gave an overview of Hydrostatics Terminology and a quick summary of the main intentional and accidental events in maritime safety and security.

Captain Giovanni Greco, of the Italian Coast Guard Headquarters, explained the role of the Company, in the maritime world and described the different types of ships.

Most of the lecture was focused on IMO's SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) convention, with its activities, regulations, inspections and necessary certifications, together with emergency procedures, possible damages and life saving appliances.

On Tuesday 07/03/02017 Captain Giovanni Greco resumed his previous day lecture, focusing on the human error and the SHEL (Software, Hardware, Environment, Liveware) model for the investigation of the accidents. He presented a case study that was to be investigated by the students. The students were very involved and enjoyed to work on some of the concept learned hands on.

In the afternoon session, Lieutenant Amalia Alberico, of the Italian Coast Guard Headquarters, explained the safety and security issues of the ports. She talked about major naval accidents and, while explaining the importance of IMO, she went through the evolution of the SOLAS convention from its first draft to the present form.
