Radioactive/Nuclear Safety and Security

07.22.2019

Dear colleagues,

It is a pleasure announce that we have concluded the week dedicated to the Radioactive and Nuclear events coordinated by Prof. Francesco d'Errico from the University of Pisa and Member of the Directive Board in Protection Against CBRNe events.

The week is started with an interesting Table Top Excercise organized by #INAC, division of #HESAR, focused on the chemical risks as closing exercise of the experience done in June @OPCW. We want to thank Michael Thornton and Alba Iannotti for the contribution in this activity.

The module is started with an interesting lecture of Col. Raffaele Zagarella (from CISAM center, Italian Ministry of Defence) that has done an overview on R/N agents and main risks. Then we had Prof. Maurizio Marrale (University of Palermo) that has done a technical overview on the main detection technique for radioactive contamination.

The module has continued with Prof. Francesco d'Errico and his research fellow Dr. Andrea Chierici (University of Pisa) that have completed a lecture of R/N main risks, detection techniques and electronic that is used by the instruments. Dr. Eric Rubestein (USA Navy) has explained the app GammaPix: Radiation Detection System - from Image Insight, Inc. to detect radiation with a smartphone. The students have been divided in teams and have done a emergency simulation at the University of Rome Tor Vergata.

The students had the chance to meet some of the private companies cooperating with the #MasterCBRN that produce technologies for RN. We want to thank Dr. Pio Ciro Aspetti (BMD spa), Dr. Laura Gerla (Else Solution) and Dr. Andrea Pepperosa (CAEN Sys) for their contribution in our courses.

We had the lecture of Dr. Marco D'Arienzo from ENEA that explained the main concept related to RadioProtection and then Dr. Mauro Civica and Dr. Giovanni Calabresi from SOGIN that had a lecture on the nuclear plant decomissioning and RN related cybersecurity.

We want to thank Prof. Francesco d'Errico for the amazing results, glad to be a unique family with University of Pisa.
