Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI) Mediterranean Initiative TABLE TOP EXERCISE 2016 - Rome, Italy |29-30 November 2016

12.12.2016

A two days Table Top Exercise (TTX) took place on the 29th and 30th of November at the National Fire Accademy (Istituto Superiore Antincendi - ISA), in the framework of the Mediterranean Initiative under the umbrella of the Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI).

The TTX has been organized as a result of the contribution of different Italian Administrations, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Coast Guard, the Department of Firefighters, Public Rescue and Civil Defense of the Ministry of Interiors and the Customs Agency. It aimed at assessing the operational responsiveness of the participating countries in fictional scenarios of smuggling of weapons of mass destruction materials, including aspects of migration management.

The TTX saw the participation of roughly 45 international delegates from indicatively 20 countries. Among the participants, three members of the Directive Board of the International Master Courses in Protection Against CBRNe Events from the University of Rome Tor Vergata (Dr. Daniele Di Giovanni, Dr. Valentina Gabbarini and Dr. Mariachiara Carestia) had the precious opportunity to take active part to the TTX, supported by Prof. Bellecci in the role of observer.

This has been a fruitful occasion to reinforce the network of experts and professionals and to tackle the issues and contingencies posed by the constant increase of migration on the one side and proliferation of weapons of mass destruction on the other that has the sea as a common scenario.
